The weather in Bansko in January is ideal for skiing. It is cold and crisp, with lots of sunshine and fresh snowfall. With an average daytime temperature of 1°C, although this can rise to 5°C on milder days. The average night time level is a chilly -3°C. However, you won’t feel cold while you are skiing. Your body temperature will naturally warm you up. Wear proper skiing and winter clothes and you’ll stay toasty for the duration of your stay. Check our recommendations what to wear.
Jacket:Since you are a beginner, you don’t want expensive and non-returnable clothes, especially in case if you decide that skiing isn’t for you. You can ask your family or friends if you can borrow their jackets. If you want to buy one, aim for water resistance of 5,000mm or more. The material of the jackets needs to let sweat and perspiration escape from the inside and again, stop water getting in from the outside.
Ski Pants: It is important to wear waterproof pants, as you should aim for something higher than 11,000mm.
Goggles: You can either use your sunglasses or buy a pair of goggles. It is important to wear any of them, as you will need them when the sun comes out or on a snowy day they will keep the snowflakes away from your sensitive skin. Helmets and hats: As part of your skiing package, you will be provided with a helmet. You must wear it while you are on the slopes, as accidents do happen. If you would like to bring your own, you are free to do so.
Gloves: Your gloves should be waterproof, warm, breathable and to fir your properly. Boots: It’s recommended to were different boots for the après-ski ski, than the one you walk in your town. A good pair of winter hiking boots are perfectly fine.
Choose quality, waterproof, thermal, warm clothing. The most important part of your skiing outfit is the layer that you wear directly next to your skin. Wear thermals on top and as well on bottom layers. Keep an eye out for breathable fibres. Skiing is a sport that will warm up during the day. That’s why underneath your top waterproof layer, it’s better to go with lots of thin layers. It will suffice a normal jumper, t-shirt, shirt or hoodie. For your legs, a pair of comfortable cotton leggings over your thermal leggings will feel pretty nice. We recommend to invest in proper thermal socks for skiing, as wearing them over your regular socks is fine. In terms of the neck warmer, you’ll appreciate the warmth it offers. There is a big variety to choose and it’s up to you if to buy one.
Skiing is quite active and dynamic sport. Being fit and physically prepared will prevent injuries and make your ski learning more enjoyable. If you haven’t started exercising already, we highly recommend to do so prior going for your skiing journey. You can exercise even for few minutes each day, no need to be a marathon runner. A good preparation may include regular sessions up to your holiday on the static bike and stepper. It also helps to be supple. You can do Pilates or yoga, as the more you practice the more you will find your skiing journey easier. Additionally, it is far less likely to injure yourself.
